Accounts kept by Coffin (1743-1774) recording various sales of foodstuffs (corn, peas, sugar, and rice) and other items (leather, pipes, pans, and shoes) to Nantucket residents, labor performed such as carting or cutting wood and records of blacksmith manufactures and work performed on sloops Dolphin, Cumberland, Hepsabeth, Enterprise, Phoenix, and other vessels (some whaling), documenting method of payment, either by cash or exchange for food, products, or services, providing a good example of the barter economy existing on Nantucket prior to the Revolutionary War. Also includes accounts (1805-1834?) kept by Elisha Clark (also found Elishai Clark, or Clarke), born in Nantucket and settled in Harlem (now China), Me., farmer, laborer, accountant, and town leader, with entries detailing accounts and also describing daily activities and the weather, including several copies or drafts of letters, vocabulary list, pressed flowers (on first page), and speech possibly copied from another source.
